According to a recent New York Times article, 2005 marked the beginning of a new minority in this country: married couples. After years of decline, couples living in wedded bliss now comprise only 49.7% of the nation’s 111.1 million households. With dwindling numbers, one might think that proponents of marriage would seek alternate sources of recruitment. For example, allowing gays and lesbians to marry would boost the statistics. It turns out, however, that while less and less people are getting married, lively debate abounds as to who should and should not be allowed this right. In line with other states, California currently defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.(2) In what is sure not to be the last word on the issue of same-sex marriages, the Court of Appeal for the First District recently held In re Marriage Cases that this opposite gender requirement is constitutional.(3)
